Educational Learning Toys – Give Kids Toys that Spark Their Imagination

Educational learning toys allow children to develop their innate curiosity. Many of today’s most popular children’s toys are not really helping kids to use their imagination. Rather, things like video games and DVDs which are strictly for entertainment are not allowing kids to learn and think, but instead, children tend to just sit and watch rather than sit and play using their imagination (like we did when I was growing up, which does not mean that I am old!).

Learning while playing is important and will help in developing your child’s strengths and creativity. Providing toys that encourage the use of imagination is something that is not done enough these days in my opinion.

I made the mistake of providing my son with a Sega Genesis when he was about 5 or 6 years old. Yes it was a lot of fun, and I actually had a ton of fun with it myself, but it set the tone for the rest of his childhood because he grew to love video games and spent a huge portion of his time playing them.

I’m not saying video games are evil or anything like that, but they can’t take the place of other toys which stimulate the imagination and require the child think instead of remaining passive.

And don’t think educational learning toys need to be dull! There are lots of fun and creative toys for kids of all ages that allow them to pretend and construct and learn and have fun. There are puzzle toys, electronic learning toys, educational science toys, dolls, puppets, arts and crafts and even classic toys that kids will love. I remember I had some plastic horses when I was a kid, and my friends and I would spend hours and hours playing with them and inventing games using the horses and their accompanying riders. I don’t really know if they would be considered “educational learning toys” but they sure sparked my imagination, and that’s the most important thing.
