Preschool Educational Toys – What Toys or Activities Can Improve Your Child’s Gross and Fine Motor Skills?

Is your child clumsy at sports, have terrible handwriting skills? Are you wondering what if any preschool educational toys might help with his or her fine motor skills?

When I went to kindergarten (yes it was a while ago), it was mainly just for fun and a way to get kids out of the house. It certainly wasn’t mandatory or necessary that all kids attend kindergarten. Nowadays if you do not have your kids not only in kindergarten but also in preschool you will find that your children will be very far behind in their skills of all types. Even if you plan to homeschool, you must start early with providing educational toys for your preschool children and also providing them with activities that will help with their life skills and with their fine and gross motor skills.

Toys like small Matchbox cars, Lincoln Logs, Building Blocks, coloring books and crayons are all helpful toys in this aspect. Just by playing with them, your child is gaining valuable motor skills that he will use for his whole life.

Coloring is especially valuable. My son hated to color. It was a big chore to get him to sit down and color a picture. In fact, it was almost impossible. As a result, at least in my opinion, his handwriting has always been terrible. Even to this day after graduating from high school, he still has atrocious handwriting. You might wonder if he is left-handed, as many left-handed kids have a problem with messy handwriting which looks more like chicken scratching. Nope, he is right-handed. I wish I had provided more preschool educational toys for him that would have been helpful for these skills. I’m not sure if it would have made a big difference, but it might have.

Other good activities to help might be threading activities, Jigsaw puzzles which required fine motor skills, or activities and crafts where you use scissors to cut. If your child is very young, be sure to use the safety scissors for kids.

Remember that playtime is the best curriculum that will promote the development of skills and growth. Provide as many learning toys for your kids as you possibly can. They will have fun and thank you for it later.
